Why do we as Americans constantly want something for nothing?

When we reach senior citizen age and retirement age, we want Medicare subsidies and social security, but don’t want to pay for it. We want a huge military, but don’t want to pay for it.

We like having law enforcement and firefighters, but when they need to purchase new technology to help them do their jobs better, we complain about a tax increase.

We constantly want the government to slash taxes, but expect more from them. We want them to lower spending, yet we don’t want certain programs cut. Then when they run a budget deficit, we complain about it. We complain about the national debt, yet we couldn’t pay for anything without it because we don’t want to pay taxes to pay for anything.

Let me get this straight. We want so much from the government, but we don’t want to pay taxes, we don’t want to borrow it, and we don’t want to print it.

How else do we fund anything then? This is the problem with the Tea parties. When they’re through with hollering about taxes and govt. spending, they’re going to go home and collect their SS checks and Medicare, but don’t want the government to increase taxes to help pay for it, and at the same time don’t want their benefits cut.

It’s like we want our cake and eat it too.
@Jake: Don’t be a hypocrite. You don’t want smaller govt. when you keep pushing a bigger and bigger military and Bush/Paulson bailouts.
No I’m not confusing them. I mean taxes altogether, state, local, and federal.

You are so very correct. At the same time, though, there are those of us who don’t mind paying our fair share in taxes, and who think that helping to pick up the less fortunate is a good thing. I really do want to believe that there are more good people than the overly entitled people, but the overly entitled people sure are a hell of a lot louder. I feel less and less like the good outweigh the overly entitled, especially with the emergence of this tea party, and these other so-called "patriots" who claim that Americans stand for unity, but then want to throw people under the bus because they aren’t "earning their keep". It sickens me.

you mean, conservatives… they are the ones complaining…

liberals are aware that nothing is free…

  3. ☼Solar☼ says:

I agree, and with our economic plight; everyone wants to reduce the deficit but not their pet project or piece of the pie.

  4. Brian says:

They don’t want anything for free. You spend 40 odd years paying for your SSI and Medicare plus you pay a monthly fee for Medicare. These programs are not something for nothing they are repayment of money that the government forced us to pay..

It seems you confuse local government with the Federal government. Most people are happy to pay for adequate police and fire protection but neither has anything to do with DC. There is tons and tons of waste in Washington and it needs to be dealt with ASAP..

  5. PO'd says:

I pay tens of thousands a year in income tax. I dont feel like I am gettig a free ride.

You must be talking about the free ride you are getting.

  6. David says:

The republican party is the party of having their cake and eating it too. I’d rather have the supposed "tax and spend" policies of the democrats over the borrow and spend style of governing that the repukes have used for 8 of the last 9 years.

  7. Chupate esa! says:

I will answer this question with the typical "common sense"…

  8. Phoenix says:

That is the liberal way of life.

  9. Brad says:

Hmmm…… Why would we want OUR Social Security benefits that WE paid into our entire career? Let me see, I guess we are just greedy like that.

Where do you think the Government gets this money to supply these things for "nothing"? From the working people! We do not want something for nothing, and if the Government would do away with Social Security and let me invest my own money I would be even happier.

  10. Jake says:

We need less, smaller government, with less government spending. Are you liberal stupid, deaf or both? We have always supported SMALLER government. You liberals are the ones who expect the government to be your nanny. Cut the government budget in half. No more freebies.

  11. Pundit says:

They don’t, SOME AMERICANS want something for nothing.

  12. Shovel Ready says:

Getting rid of an entitlement is nearly impossible.

  13. Philip McCrevice says:

    Republicans don’t want these programs.

We want to keep our own money, invest in our own 401k, get rid of Social Security (and the SS tax).

Democrats want all these entitlement programs.

So you seem to confuse what Republicans want and what Democrats want.

  14. jdm says:

Our government has been grooming us to live like this and reliant upon them for nearly a century now.

  15. Glenn Beck Teabagged Me! says:

You have properly outlined exactly why the Tea Party is 100% ridiculous.

  16. RayHere says:

You make a good point with the exception of SS and medicare The employee has paid into to that from the first dollar he.she earned !5% of that dollar 7.5% is taken out of that first dollar and the employer matches it They do that to hide the fact that the first dollar you make you pay 15% for your retirement
Look at the age of the tea parties they are the ones paying the tax’s in America and have been for years so only they have a right to protest high tax’s not some kid living off his parents at home
They are really protesting the impending high tax;s as they well go up

  17. Gloria says:

I agree 100%. The problem is the lack of anything even close to intelligence, understanding, comprehension, or common sense possessed by the majority of the teabaggers. If they had brains, you wouldn’t have heard the morons shouting about "no government interference in our health care, keep your hands off our Medicare." Trying to mine any spark of intelligence from these folks is an exercise in futility. They don’t get it and they never will. Screw ‘em.

  18. james says:

I think you’re confusing states vs. federal taxation. 45% of the people in this country do not pay taxes. The one’s that do pay taxes are afforded an incompetant law code that essentially plagues those who are willing to pay, but simple mistakes wreak havoc on there lives by having to chronically deal with the incompetent government. This adds insult to injury and conservatives want no more of it. The federal government is incompetent and incredibily corrupt. There is so much waste due to corruption on the federal level that no one wants to buy into it anymore.

If you do not pay federal taxes, I am of the persuation you shouldn’t be able to vote, and those who have paid taxes deserve direct representation and have the customer service afforded to them to make sure they can resolve tax issues in a reasonable manner rather than having interest, penalties, harrassment, and beaurocratic incompetence become a larger and larger part of there lives.

  19. slave2fadz says:

Because it’s possible in liberal America. The first recipient from the social security ponzi sheme paid in twelve dollars and recieved twelve thousand in welfare. Anyone else see a problem with this math?

  20. Bob says:

Liberal "americans" want something for nothing. They refuse to accept personal responsibility for themselves. They are the ones who demanded relaxed lending requirements, and then did not pay back their mortgages and loans. They pay no taxes, the lower 50% of wage earners don’t, yet demand the rest of us who have worked hard and earn more, pay a higher percent of our income to the government to be disbursed in subsidies and handouts. Your self centered attitude is a major threat to the financial stability in this country. If you want more, work hard and earn it. Quit relying on the government to steal from me, so you can benefit.

  21. Genegee says:

That is how politicians get elected and reelected by promising something for nothing. And if they deliver on the promise they will be reelected. It is all a ploy to keep them in office at the tax payers expense. they do care in helping the citizen as much as them helping themselves and we only have ourselves to blame for that.Would you vote for someone who tell us that we have to tighten our spending belts and if l am elected l plan to cut a lot of wasteful programs or would you vote for a person who tells you that if he is elected he is going to make sure that every person of driving age gets a new car?

  22. Erma says:

    Republicans don’t want these programs.

We want to keep our own money, invest in our own 401k, get rid of Social Security (and the SS tax).

Democrats want all these entitlement programs.

So you seem to confuse what Republicans want and what Democrats want.******************************Wait, wasn’t it Bush that said that people should be able to take their SS and invest it in the Stock Market? The Democrats and many of the Republicans stopped that run away train before it had a chance to wreck. Some companies don’t have a 401K plan. What should happen in such an instance? Should the government then force a company to provide a 401K plan for their employees? That would be government overstepping its bounds.

Those stupid Republican faught to the very end to stop companies from providing maternity leave for men to stay home with their wives. Anything that would help the average person is what the Republicans are against.

The upper middle class educated Tea Baggers are still lacking something upstairs. Education will not prevent a person from being overtaken by stupidity. Case and point: the educated elitist teabaggers are dumber than dirt on the issues.

  23. blue317 says:

Derek, you don’t get it…The point is not paying taxes (we get that)…Because The Tea Partiers are the ones paying the taxes…Our concern is…Why do we have 45% or more who do not pay anything and get all of those benefits also? So your question is really to the one pay nothing…

Welfare their entire life and receive SS at retirement age
Welfare their entire life and Medicare subsides
Welfare their entire life and Military Support
Welfare their entire life and Police and Fire protection
